Riverview, Colorado is the mythical small town in the USA used as a backdrop for this story of romance and suspense. The people of the town are friendly and support each other in times of trial. They also need a person in town who can fix things. Enter Doyle Garrison, a former Army Ranger with skills to fix anything from a toaster to a computer. Recently divorced, his good friend Roger Meadows who owns a ranch close to town, has talked him into moving away from the larger cities. With his life in the cities in shambles, Doyle heads West, looking to find a new life where he can repair both his pride and his wounded heart. When he finds a dog in a dumpster, he rescues the animal and enjoys a new traveling companion.
Unfortunately, Snatch (the dog), puts Doyle in a bad light with a long legged beauty when the animal jumps from his truck, runs over and sticks his cold wet nose between her legs as she is bent over a broken car.
With this introduction, the relationship between the two is strained and gets more so when Stephanie discovers Doyle is the new tenant of the guesthouse on the back of the property. It takes days before they have formed an uneasy friendship. With many miscues and strange trials, they begin to know each other and a shaky bridge of trust is formed. The night they are asked to rescue stranded livestock a pets from the path of a wild land fire, they witness the arsonist spreading the flames. They escape, but end up spending the night wet, cold and hungry stranded in a burned over gully waiting for help. Morning finds them snuggled under a horse rug while they wait for their clothes to dry. Can the passions of the night survive in the bright light of day and can they stay ahead of the man who wants them dead because they are the only ones who can tie him to the crime?
